Our story starts
off different than most organizations assisting veterans with disabilities.
Unlike others, when Military Missions in Action started, I did not know anyone
who had been injured in Iraq or Afghanistan, and no one in my family was ever
disabled in the military. My grandfather, William Edwin Andrews, served in World
War II and was a Prisoner of War in Stalag XVII in Kerms, Austria for 17 months,
and I served in the United States Coast Guard for 20 years.
The idea for Military Missions in Action came
one morning while watching the sunrise on Hunting Island. I was thinking about
my life growing up in North Carolina, my career in the Coast Guard and my life
as a contractor after the Coast Guard, and I felt the need to do more with my
life. I was becoming aware that, with the high number of returning veterans
suffering from disabilities, a need existed to have their homes modified so they
can live independently. I was also aware that a large number of Veterans are
just now suffering disabilities from the Vietnam War and that age was becoming a
disability for World War II Veterans.
The thought
was that Military Missions in Action would help Veterans with disabilities
achieve independent living with home modifications. This is completed by our
Community Giveback Program, where groups of volunteers all come
together to give back to our Veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom.
I also wanted to honor our fallen heroes like my grandfather and support our men
and women currently serving in the armed forces. Because of this, MMIA started
the
Everlasting Military Memorial and the Fill the
Footlocker Program. I believe it is the responsibility of everyone to
take care of our men and woman of the armed forces, it does not matter whether
you are young or old, rich or poor, Republican or Democrat, it is our
responsibility to support those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.
